Photographer Andrés Altamirano joins Guatemalan furniture designers Estefanía de Ros and Gustavo Quintana-Kennedy of Agnes Studio on a journey to document ‘Amuletos’, a collection of furniture and objects for their first solo show in Mexico City. Together, they travel across Guatemala. They venture to Guatemarmol, the largest quarry in Guatemala where they source their marble; they visit Byron Ralac and his family in the highlands in Momostenango, a place known for its woven ponchos; and they finish on the icy waters of Lake Atitlán. This book, Viaje a Los Amuletos, is the story of their ‘Journey to Amuletos’.
Opening with a poem by Maya K’iche’-Kaqchikel poet Rosa Chávez, it is an exploration and documentation of Guatemala’s cultural and artistic heritage. It is a journey of discovery, of materiality and of place – a search for the symbols and elements of good luck and fortune that connect us as humans, weaving together the threads of ancient tradition and contemporary design.
